Visualization in Software Engineering

Software visualization research focuses on creating visual representations that make software engineering products and procedures more easily perceptible, comprehendible, and manageable. This is a particularly challenging research problem because software systems are complex by nature, encompassing a large number of artifacts whose representations and interrelationships change with time. Moreover, the expansive range and overlap of software engineering lifecycle activities, including analysis, specification, design, construction, test, and maintenance creates an environment in which a multiplicity of visualization paradigms may not only be required but also must be correlated and managed.

The purpose of this symposium is to explore software engineering visualization within the context of information and knowledge visualization. Its goal is to not only present state-of-the-art research but also identify those concepts, issues, paradigms, etc. that are common to these three fields in order to set a perspective for future research.

Papers on all aspects of visualization in software engineering are solicited. Papers will be refereed and appear in the conference proceedings to be published by the IEEE Computer Society.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Visualization of the software engineering lifecycle
  • Visualization of software architectures
  • Visualization tools for software engineering
  • Heuristics and metrics for visualization in software engineering
  • Empirical evaluation of the use of visualization in software engineering
  • Visualization methods for requirements engineering
  • Visualization methods for formal verification/validation of software
  • Visualization methods supporting the management process
  • Software engineering visualization case studies
  • Reviews and surveys of related literature
