5th International Symposium
Knowledge Visualization and Visual Thinking, KV09

Introduction

Knowledge Visualization and Visual Thinking are important in science and industry. In both research areas, analog and digital visual approaches support the creation, application and communication of knowledge and insights. This holds especially true for situations in which people from different educational, cultural, and professional backgrounds collaborate. Whilst Information Visualization (IV) concentrates on the use of computer-based tools to explore large data sets, Knowledge Visualization (KV) and Visual Thinking investigate (1) how to create and transfer insights in groups, (2) how to manage and reduce complexity and how to make things understandable, and (3) how to support learning with new infrastructures, e.g. consisting of large interactive displays. Furthermore and in contrast to Information Design, Knowledge Visualization aims to facilitate the transfer of insights, experiences, values, expectations, perspectives, opinions, and predictions. Researchers active in the domains of Knowledge Visualization and Visual Thinking develop tools and methods to make knowledge visible and to improve processes for knowledge to be identified, accessed, shared, discussed, applied, and generally managed.

Aims

This symposium on Knowledge Visualization and Visual Thinking is an international, interdisciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners from different disciplines, such as Knowledge Visualization, Information Architecture, Argument Mapping, Knowledge Management, Information Design, Cognitive Science and Art, Infoaestethics, Interface Design, Storytelling, and Communication Studies to address and discuss theories, methodologies, techniques, applications, evaluations, and case studies related to the visualization of knowledge and processes which involve visual thinking. Researchers from Asia are especially encouraged to present their studies in order to stimulate intercultural debates.

Scope

The symposium seeks original papers concerning, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Fundamentals, theories, frameworks, and models of Knowledge Visualization and Visual Thinking
  • Case studies, evaluations, and innovations in Knowledge Visualization and Visual Thinking
  • Case studies, evaluations, and innovations in the area of “Complexity Management” (e.g., communication of large projects or visualizations as support to implement complex processes, etc), both in science and business
  • Case studies and evaluations in the area of marketing and sales support, especially in the realm of abstract services in business
  • Case studies, applications, and innovations on the use of visual approaches for science communication to the general public (e.g. explaining the pros and cons of nano technology to non-experts, etc.)
  • Applications for infrastructures consisting of one or more large interactive touch-displays
  • Research and case studies on the use of visual metaphors in science and business
  • Research on the economic impact of visualizations and the contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
