5th International Symposium Design and Aesthetics in Visualisation, DAVis
	DAViz Symposium Theme -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Design and Aesthetics in Visualisation This symposium supports research in two general domains: Design Practice and Aesthetics. Design practice refers to the use of Visualisation as a component of Design processes and methods. Aesthetics refers to the role of aesthetics in acceptance, cognition, and use of Visualisation tools. This symposium presents an opportunity to explore these issues and their consequences for information visualization. Papers presenting original research with the theme of "Design and Aesthetics in Visualisation" are being sought. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to): Domain 1: Design Practice Scope: Various design processes in diverse knowledge areas often make use of visualization tools as an integral component. Such uses support the design process by enhancing cognition of problems and exploring. Particular areas of interest for this symposium are (but are not limited to): Visual Thinking / Reasoning in Design Visual Thinking in Design Ideation Visual Design Languages Generative Approaches to Design Problems Methods of Visualisation in Design Visualisation for/of collaborative design Visualisations methods used in Industry Future methods of visualization Methodologies of design practice in visualization Domain 2: Aesthetics Scope: Information Visualization practitioners are routinely faced with solving problems of visual representation and communication. The selection of graphical elements and their semantic meanings as representational primitives has been a frequent, though somewhat under-explored topic of study in the community. The work of Bertin, Tufte, and others is well-known and often cited. Norman is now addressing the role of aesthetics in interaction. However, the more general topic of aesthetics in Information Visualisation suffers from a comparative lack of study. While the "look and feel" of information systems is often recognized as important for usability, satisfaction, and acceptance, the role of aesthetics relevant to information visualization tools is poorly understood. Particular areas of interest are (but are not limited to): · Aesthetics and Interaction Aesthetics of Visualization interfaces Immersiveness and visualisations Visualisation Interaction and aesthetics/pleasure Aesthetic design and usability Evaluation methods for aesthetic designs Theory of aesthetics for visualization Purely aesthetic exploration – i.e., no explicit applied uses NOTE: Following the conference, a number of papers will be identified for publication in a special issue/book. Authors will be asked to submit extended versions of their papers at that time.
